What is Air by Propeller?

Air by Propeller is an open API and suite of free tools to find out asthma conditions in your area based on weather conditions and air quality. Propeller has collected millions of data points on where, when and why asthma symptoms may happen. Propeller uses this information to address an important part of the local outdoor risks for asthma symptoms.

Why is Air by Propeller important?

Changes in your local environment may increase the difficulty of breathing. It is important to pay close attention to conditions and changes so that you can be prepared for your asthma symptoms.

Why are we offering this?

Many people living with asthma still have symptoms and frequent attacks, leading to missed days of school, work and billions of dollars in healthcare costs. Propeller has data to understand how local weather and air quality conditions may influence the risk of asthma symptoms. We want to share our information and learnings so people can be better prepared and live more symptom-free days.

What data are we using and where are the data coming from?

Propeller has trained a machine learning model on millions of days of anonymized data including where and when people experience asthma symptoms, and the weather and air quality conditions at these times, to predict when people’s breathing may be impacted. Environmental data is pulled from local and national sources including:

Outdoor air pollutants from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA):
  • Particulate matter of 2.5 microns or smaller (PM2.5) and particulate matter of 10 microns or smaller (PM10)
  • Ozone
  • Nitrogen dioxide (NO2)
  • Sulfur Dioxide (SO2)
Weather from National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA):
  • Temperature
  • Wind speed
  • Humidity

Other potential triggers such as exercise, allergens, indoor environment exposures, viral infections or other personal triggers are not included in local asthma conditions from Air.

What do the scores mean?

Good: There is lower risk for asthma symptoms based on your local air quality.

Fair: There is a moderate risk for asthma symptoms based on your local air quality.

Poor: There is high risk for asthma symptoms based on your local air quality.
