The combination of the flu with COPD or asthma can mean having more bad days, a hospital stay or even worse – death.

So if you have asthma or COPD then you should be first in line to get a flu shot! Why exactly?

Colds, viruses and other infections tend to happen more frequently in the fall and winter months. Getting a flu shot can mean a less severe bout of the flu or – hurray – avoiding getting it all together. The flu shot can strengthen your immune system to help you combat the flu, which helps protect your lungs from further inflammation. Less inflammation means less coughing, less wheezing, less agony!

Beyond the flu shot, there are a number of other easy things you can do to safeguard your immune system during flu season:helps protect your lungs from further inflammation. Less inflammation means less coughing, less wheezing, less agony!

  • Wash your hands, often – especially after shaking hands, using public facilities and before you eat.
  • Use tissues instead of cloth handkerchiefs when you are sick (and discard them appropriately).
  • Eat healthy food to give your body the nutrients it needs to fend off the nasties.
  • Get enough rest – a tired body is more susceptible to sickness.
